On the 13th September 1848, Phineas Gage was working rail construction south of Cavendish, Vermont. Part of Gage’s job was to prepare large boulders for blasting. This involved drilling a hole deep into the rock, adding gunpowder and a fuse before using a tamping iron to pack sand on top. The tamping iron was one metre long, had a diameter of 3 cm and weighed approximately 6 kilos. At approximately 4:30pm the tamping iron sparked against the rock and, possibly because Gage had neglected to add sand, ignited the gunpowder. The explosion propelled the tamping iron out of the blast hole with enough force to pass directly through the head of Phineas Gage where it finally landed some 25 metres away covered in brains and blood. Incredibly, Gage survived and after a few minutes, was able to speak and walk. Although Phineas lost his left eye, he would go on to live for another 12 years. The case of Phineas Gage was instrumental in determining that not only was the pre-frontal cortex involved in personality but that damage to the cortex could result in personality changes whilst leaving other neurological functions intact.
