This 2 sided custom print features an interesting and largely unknown fact about the origins of the feature film format.
The Latham Loop was developed for motion picture image capture and projection in 1895. In the early days of film capture and projection, one of the major issues faced was that of damage to the film. The inertia of the take up reel in lengths of film longer than 50-100 feet, would often result in the film tearing or snapping in half. Eugene Lauste whilst working for Woodville Latham discovered that a small loop in the film placed above and below the lens of the projector could isolate the celluloid from tension and vibration. As such, the loop would redistribute the stress placed on the film, thus allowing for magazines of greater length to be shot and projected. This simple yet crucial innovation offered vast new creative possibilities allowing cinema to evolve from a gimmick, into an art form.
